Squarespace: Reviews from 6 Female Entrepreneurs

Here are six female entrepreneurs who share why they use Squarespace, what their experience has been like working with the platform, and whether or not they recommend it.

Squarespace is the platform this website is built on, and in my opinion, it offers a ton of benefits for businesses with a minimalist aesthetic that are looking for a comprehensive, easy-to-manage, and robust platform. I’ve specialized in Squarespace web design for years, and I use it and recommend it 100%.

But I don't want you to just take my word for it, so I've gathered feedback from several female entrepreneurs who use Squarespace for their websites. In total, I've spoken with six entrepreneurs who share why they use Squarespace, what their experience has been like working with the platform, and whether or not they recommend it.

Well, I'll leave you to them, and if you have any questions about Squarespace, feel free to message me on Instagram.

How did you hear about Squarespace?

Several influential figures from the English-speaking world whom I admired mentioned that their websites were on Squarespace. That was the first time I heard about this platform.

So what made you choose Squarespace over WordPress or Blogger?

I have to admit that I fell in love with the design of every single one of their templates. Every time I saw a website built on Squarespace, it was clean, stylish, and looked incredibly professional... Nothing like the cluttered websites you usually come across.

I was surprised that no one in the Spanish-speaking world was talking about Squarespace. I couldn't understand how such a comprehensive platform—with exquisite design and, above all, so easy to use and maintain—wasn't everyone's go-to choice.

In your opinion (or your clients’ opinion), what are the benefits of managing your website on Squarespace? Does it cause you a lot of headaches?

I started out without having the slightest idea what the terms "domain" or "hosting" meant... I was literally starting from scratch. I couldn't find anyone to design my website, so necessity kind of forced me to take matters into my own hands. I came across a platform that was so easy to use that I eventually became an expert.

Of all the features, integrations, and little extras that Squarespace offers, which one do you like best or get the most out of?

I love that you can add different features to pages using modules. It’s super convenient and intuitive, and it gives you tremendous flexibility when designing each page.

What would you say to someone who’s curious about Squarespace but hasn’t made up their mind yet?

The first thing we should all consider when designing a website is what we’ll need. If you’re looking for the most common features and functionalities in a website, Squarespace is, in my opinion, the best option. It has it all—design, functionality, ease of use…—and you can do it all on your own.

You wouldn't believe how many clients come to us looking for WordPress maintenance services because something isn't working right, or because there have been updates and something isn't working for them.

I always hear the same thing from people who've switched from WordPress to Squarespace: "It saves me time and headaches... and in the long run, it's saving me money, too."

How did you hear about Squarespace?

To be honest, I don't exactly remember how I first heard about Squarespace. A long time ago, long before I became a freelance designer, I started following American bloggers. Many of them mentioned in their posts that they used this platform to manage their websites.

They talked about how easy it was and how much it simplified their lives. I couldn't help but be curious, so I signed up for an account that came with a 14-day free trial. I was able to explore some of its features, but since I wasn't planning on having a website at the time, I left it at that.

So what made you choose Squarespace over WordPress or Blogger?

When I took the plunge into the freelance world, I decided to set up my first website. I chose WordPress based on recommendations from friends who used the platform and said it was the best. I stuck with it for about a year, but honestly, it didn’t work for me and was far from being the best option. It took up a lot of my time just keeping it updated to avoid security issues. On top of that, I rarely updated my site’s content because it was so complicated.

Fed up with this situation and realizing that having an active website (i.e., one with constantly updated content) is super important, I decided to give Squarespace another try. This time, my goal was to recreate my website on this platform. I had it up and running in less than 10 days—I couldn’t believe how fast it went.

From that day on, everything changed in my business.

In your opinion (or your clients’ opinion), what are the benefits of managing your website on Squarespace? Does it cause you a lot of headaches?

As I mentioned in the previous point, I used to use WordPress, and it gave me so many headaches that now, with Squarespace, I feel like everything is almost perfect. I have some knowledge of HTML/CSS and I’m pretty tech-savvy, so it hasn’t been difficult to manage.

My clients have had a similar experience. Even though they don't know HTML or CSS—and some aren't exactly tech-savvy—they find managing their websites easy. It's just a matter of understanding how it works.

Not only is it very easy to use, but the customer service is also excellent. If you ever run into a problem, you can contact them via email or chat, and they’ll do their best to resolve it right away.

Of all the features, integrations, and little extras that Squarespace offers, which one do you like best or get the most out of?

Squarespace has really helped me grow my business. Every day, I try to take another step toward building a fully digital business—one that doesn't rely on a physical location to operate.

That’s why one of the features I like best is the ability to create new sections on my website. It has made my life so much easier. For instance, when I present brand identity design projects to my clients, I do so through a presentation on my website. It takes me much less time to do it that way than to create a traditional PowerPoint presentation, for example. Plus, I can later use that presentation as part of my portfolio.

What would you say to someone who’s curious about Squarespace but hasn’t made up their mind yet?

I’d definitely recommend giving it a try—I’m sure you won’t regret it. That said, if you’re going to do it yourself, it’s best to follow my lead and try to recreate a website on Squarespace. This will help you understand the platform’s features and limitations.

How did you hear about Squarespace?

I discovered Squarespace in 2015. I was listening to The Lively Show podcast, and the episode was sponsored by Squarespace. If you signed up using their link, they gave you a 30-day free trial and a nice discount if you ended up purchasing. I was just getting started with Grandiosas Emprendedoras, so I took it as a sign from the Universe! I didn’t think twice, and I fell in love!

So what made you choose Squarespace over WordPress or Blogger?

I had already tried WordPress and Blogger on other projects, but they weren’t what I wanted for Grandiosas Emprendedoras. I knew exactly what I needed: something simple and professional. Something that would make my life easier and look beautiful.

In your opinion (or your clients’ opinion), what are the benefits of managing your website on Squarespace? Does it cause you a lot of headaches?

No more headaches with Squarespace! In my opinion, it’s the best website platform out there. It’s super easy to manage everything and get things looking exactly how you want them in no time.

Plus, since it’s so visual, you can’t go wrong! And there’s no way you can “mess up” the website (unlike with WordPress).

And you don't have to be a tech expert or a designer to get the website you want! With Squarespace, you can forget about all the technical details: there's not much spam, you don't have to worry about hosting or backups (or even the domain!), the Squarespace team takes care of everything, and they're constantly updating the platform to make it even better and adding new features. They even add new templates every so often, and they’re all included in your membership! What more could you ask for?

Of all the features, integrations, and little extras that Squarespace offers, which one do you like best or get the most out of?

ALL OF THEM! Like I said before, I'm totally in love!

Above all, I love the updates they've made to the images lately. You don't need Photoshop to overlay or add text! And they give you lots of template options so you can customize them exactly how you want. It saves me so much time!

What would you say to someone who’s curious about Squarespace but hasn’t made up their mind yet?

DON'T HESITATE… Give it a try! Especially if you're just starting out and don't want any headaches with your website.

With WordPress, it takes a long time to learn how to use it properly, and you might mess up the template or run into issues with your hosting. You have to learn a lot of things and technical terms. And even more if you want to add an e-commerce feature too!

With Squarespace, everything is included and it's simple. For me, at this stage of my business where I'm the only one running things and handling everything myself, it's a huge weight off my shoulders!

How did you hear about Squarespace?

I first heard about Squarespace through English-language blogs. I was struck by the simplicity and elegance of some of the designs, and, thinking they were built with WordPress, I started researching templates and HTML code to achieve a similar style—until I realized they were actually using original Squarespace templates.

So what made you choose Squarespace over WordPress or Blogger?

My situation was very simple. I needed to create attractive sales pages, but I couldn't figure out how to do it properly with WordPress. I tried twenty different plugins (both paid and free), and I even experimented with Leadpages, but I didn't like how they looked in the end. I'm usually very particular about the visual aspect, and I couldn't believe how difficult it was to put together a decent sales page.

In your opinion (or your clients’ opinion), what are the benefits of managing your website on Squarespace? Does it cause you a lot of headaches?

At first, I had a hard time getting the hang of the platform because I was so used to WordPress, but once I got the hang of it, there was no going back. It might be hard for me to explain it to my colleagues because everything is in English*, but you can learn how to use it in just a few days. Unlike WordPress, with Squarespace you don’t need to install plugins or external apps because everything is already included.

*Squarespace is now available in Spanish.

Of all the features, integrations, and little extras that Squarespace offers, which one do you like best or get the most out of?

What I like most about Squarespace is how easy it is to create landing pages using its Cover Pages feature. I can literally put together beautiful landing pages in two minutes. On top of that, I love the design templates available. It’s really hard to end up with an unattractive blog on Squarespace.

What would you say to someone who’s curious about Squarespace but hasn’t made up their mind yet?

To all my colleagues who are curious about trying Squarespace, I recommend giving it a try for a couple of days. Squarespace offers a 14-day free trial; if you like it, you can start paying a monthly fee. It’s more expensive than other WordPress hosting services, but for me, it’s worth the investment. With a clean, professional look, it’s much easier to raise your prices and recoup that investment through the sales you generate.

How did you hear about Squarespace?

I wanted something unique, easy, and, above all, elegant for my website. I looked into different options online, and since Mr. Google knows almost everything, after searching high and low I came across Squarespace. I found it “addictive” in the sense that they let you try out the platform to see if it’s what you’re looking for, and so, little by little, by trying and trying, I had almost the entire website figured out. :)

So what made you choose Squarespace over WordPress or Blogger?

The truth is, I've built a ton of websites on WordPress, but diving back into another one would have taken more time than I really wanted to spend. It was how easy it was to set everything up and the combination of quality and speed with which you can create your website that made me decide to go with it.

In your opinion (or your clients’ opinion), what are the benefits of managing your website on Squarespace? Does it cause you a lot of headaches?

Not at all! It couldn't be simpler—you don't need any special expertise. The whole process is very intuitive and gives me tons of different options to customize my page exactly how I want it and create a strong brand identity.

Of all the features, integrations, and little extras that Squarespace offers, which one do you like best or get the most out of?

What I like most is being able to design pages directly on the website and see how they look as I edit them. Even though WordPress has something similar (Visual Composer), it doesn't quite win me over. The only thing that puts me off a bit about Squarespace is the price—it’s 18 euros a month (for the basic package). I think I’d be happier if they had a one-time fee for “lifetime” use, haha.

What would you say to someone who’s curious about Squarespace but hasn’t made up their mind yet?

You need to feel comfortable with your website—after all, it’s your home in the online world. You should figure out what works best for you and who can offer support when you need it. One of the reasons I chose Squarespace (aside from its ease of use) is that there’s 24/7 support available to help you with whatever you need and set up your site exactly how you want it. Help is everywhere!

How did you hear about Squarespace?

I found out about it through Pinterest. I came across an article on how to create recipes using the Menu block on the platform, and it seemed very easy to use. I had already heard of other similar WYSIWYG platforms, but I hadn’t been drawn to the idea because they made me feel so limited (I’m a programmer, so I needed the ability to write my own code). Something prompted me to look into it a bit more, and when I saw in their Knowledge Base that I could have the best of both worlds—editing the code while the client could edit text and images—I decided to try it out on my own website. Being able to build a complete website in less than a week without 500 errors or having to spend an entire day setting up the development environment immediately won me over, introducing me to a whole new world.

So what made you choose Squarespace over WordPress or Blogger?

I would say it boils down to three main reasons:

  1. Speed of Development and Design: I usually design pages in Illustrator before writing any code. That’s why one of the most time-consuming processes for me used to be searching for base templates or building the framework of my theme from scratch. Before I could start designing, I needed to establish the structure, and as you know, there are millions of options for WordPress. Having fewer options in Squarespace has helped me be more precise and decisive when designing. Limiting the options forces creativity, leading to better results. Plus, Squarespace’s development framework is more up-to-date (WordPress has been on the market for almost 15 years now, and PHP is a bit outdated) and easier to work with.

  2. It’s more user-friendly: I used to spend a lot of time helping my clients learn how to update their websites, as well as making changes that they could have done on their own. I don’t believe in handing clients websites they don’t feel they can control. They’re paying for a product, and if I’m not available to help them in the future, it’s as if I hadn’t given them anything at all. With every website I deliver, I provide tools so the client can update it on their own, and Squarespace allows me to do just that.

  3. Requires less maintenance: WordPress requires constant updates, and implementing an update can take days if any of the plugins aren’t compatible. Squarespace is a managed platform, so it doesn’t use plugins as such. This has its drawbacks since it limits functionality, but for informational websites it’s a godsend because maintenance costs are reduced to every 4 to 6 months. I should also add that WordPress has more moving parts, which increases the likelihood of errors. I’ve cut the time I spend troubleshooting errors by nearly 80% since making the switch.

In your opinion (or your clients’ opinion), what are the benefits of managing your website on Squarespace? Does it cause you a lot of headaches?

When I finish each project, I provide a video explaining which parts they can modify and how to do so. After implementing this, my clients have had virtually complete freedom to change text and images, and the more adventurous ones have even created pages on their own. Occasionally, they accidentally change something and the page gets messed up, but it’s nothing that can’t be fixed in just a few minutes, since I design with this in mind.

Of all the features, integrations, and little extras that Squarespace offers, which one do you like best or get the most out of?

Well, as a programmer, I love being able to create editable sections practically anywhere. This lets me create templates for my clients that are easy to modify yet feature-rich. As a designer, I love how easy it is to create columns that work perfectly on mobile devices with minimal tweaking. As an entrepreneur, I love that making a change takes just seconds, and I can quickly see how everything will look once I click "Save."

What would you say to someone who’s curious about Squarespace but hasn’t made up their mind yet?

Squarespace offers a free trial. You’ve got nothing to lose by giving it a try! If you plan to include specific features, do a little research to see if you can find a compatible alternative on Squarespace or a developer who can build the feature for you.
